Welcome to Modernist Networks and Place
Introduction
Modernism, a spectacle that dominated multiple artistic disciplines majorly through the first half of the twentieth century, challenged traditions, laughed at conventional society and emotionally absorbed and challenged their audience. Alfred Jarry, Mary Butts and Bruno Schulz’s contribution to this era demonstrates how modernists of different disciplines were able to challenge and change tradition in very different ways.
This project will look at how the common theme of place relates these artist individuals who are seemingly difficult to draw connections between due to the continuing challenge faced by scholars of analysing and understanding modernism. It will also look at how the idea of ‘place’ was important and impacted on both creations and the lives of the modernists. Focusing on place and location, visuals will be used to demonstrate the movements of the modernists, their locations, events surrounding their work and the connections with others throughout their professional and personal life. The idea is that this will demonstrate how their location and events that surround them has an impact and importance on the creation of their work and their creation of themselves as a modernist.
You will find information surrounding the modernists and their works through the visual aids of posters, maps, and network webs to help develop a solid understanding and visual representation of place, location, events and movements surrounding the modernism of Jarry, Butts and Schultz. To accompany these visual aids, scholarly blog posts will analyse the importance and impact of place, and hopefully reinforce the ideas and address any confusion about the topic that the reader will have made from the visual sources, as well as host the opportunity to redirect the reader to further scholarly sources if desired.
